Top Ted Talks for Authors

I confess...I'm a bit of a Ted Talk addict. I find them so motivating and I love that they're short, so I can squeeze them into my day when I'm doing something else.

Here's my run down of my most motivating or interesting talks that never fail to get me ready to write and kick the day's butt!

MY YEAR OF SAYING YES TO EVERYTHING by Shonda Rhimes

This one struck a chord with me. It's particularly good timing to watch this given Shondaland's huge success with Bridgerton. Shonda talks of her work and the 'hum' that came with it. She talks of work being her identity--she is work and work is her. And she admits how hard simply having fun is. I felt it all and it was such a relief to hear someone else say it aloud and clarify my feelings.

WHY YOU NEED TO BE A BITCH by Tabatha Coffey

This is just generally inspiring. Tabatha really reminds you to be unapologetic in your ambitions and analyses the use of the word 'bitch' particularly in reference to women.

HOW TO SPOT A LIAR by Pamela Meyer

This is more useful for writing characters but just fascinating to me in general. Be sure to actually watch rather than listen to this to see real life examples of what Pamela talks of in effect.

HOW TO GAIN CONTROL OF YOUR FREE TIME by Laura Vandkerkam

I really, genuinely thought I had no time to look after myself. Not even one single minute to set aside for meditation. Laura gives a short, sharp reality check and provides a good reminder that authors trying to gain control of their schedules actually can if they really want to.

HACKING YOUR BRAIN FOR HAPPINESS by James Doty

We all want to be happier right? James Doty explains that compassion is the very key to happiness and talks of his research on the matter. It's truly fascinating and inspired me to make compassion a much bigger part of my life.

I hope these talks give you a bit of inspiration and help you navigate the crazy world of being an author. If you want more of my recommend talks, books, and links relating to self-improvement, you can find me on Pinterest.
